The unofficial GUN talk thread

I'll be on your machine gun crew

Does anyone know where I can acquire skeet loads for 12ga? Tried doing some clay pigeon killing and eventually murdered my shoulder. Dad said he thought some companies made special load that are easier on the shoulder than regular 7-1/2 shot

i-wag: cabelas was stocking some french stuff for a while, dirt cheap($5 a box) and their 7.5 load was super light. I shot a bunch out of my trench gun project with a 18.25" barrel and it was a goat cat...

I believe it was called "Rio", should be in a brown or red box, marked in french and english. I shot a bunch of it and didn't have a single failure.

Hey it works!

I saw someone helping with the belt. Being a former machine gunner I know what that means! I know what was about to happen.

Ok so I know a couple of you are fabricators by hobby... Any chance someone would be willing to help me put together some cheapo, easy, and portable steel handgun targets. I can most likely come up with all kinds of steel scrap from my fathers machine shop. Heck, I could probably whip something out on my own there too, but thought it might be a fun little project to do with some other gun enthusiasts.

I can picture a fairly easy design on pounding a pipe into the ground at your local shooting spot, and slipping another larger tube over it with an downward leaning steel plate attached to it. When done, lift off the "head", and bang the pipe out of the ground.

The only thing is that you don't want to use round anything. It would need to be either square with a point or angle to reduce the risk of a direct ricochet.

Hmmm. Something to consider. Maybe some others will chime in with some suggestions. Just cause I can envision it, doesn't mean its a good idea. I know paper targets have there place. But mostly I want something with instant feedback that doesn't require resetting. Something that will easily fit in a trunk, and sets up as easy as it takes down. And I think I can be crafty enough to fab something, and not have to buy them.

I might have just been WAY over thinking this. Ive settled on this idea:

Intead of hard mounting. I will do a hanging target. Now with hanging targets (unless very heavy) you might have a harder time on follow up shots with a swinging target. But that being said, this might make for a cheap and easily portable option. I thought about buying some of these. And then cutting up some 1/4" - 3/8" steel into rounds or squares, drilling a hole in it, spray paint. Presto, push in the stand, and hang the plate. DONE!

Thoughts????

Talking to myself here... But also I thought to add to more safety from ricochet. I wondered about instead of drilling a hole to hang it flat. What if you welded a loop on the back down a couple inches to move the fulcrum down a bit, and give the plate some tip toward the ground. It would make for more fab work, but might be worth the extra work for the added safety of deflecting the bullet fragments straight to the ground as much as possible. AND DISCUSS!

Nate, I would be willing to build something. I have been talking to my co-worker about doing this for a while, but it seems I never make time to plan it out and do it. There is a steel yard right down the street from where I work(Goldsteins, in Scarb) We could get some angle iron and a few hunks of 1/4" plate, and make some falling plates. Should be easy, and we could make thinner plates for use with .22....

It might be a week or so before I have time, but it would be fun!

Nice! I was hoping you would chime in. I do have access to tons of scrap steel. I will be rummaging through my dads place (he owns a machine shop) sometime too for some goodies. I can get angle iron, and flat bar (I need to check into the plate steel. He doesn't use too much of that) I wouldn't mind making up some falling plates. But def wanna try and make up some simple and portable hanging plates. I just love the instant feedback of steel targets, and hanging them requires no resetting.

I can get some pictures upon request, but is anyone interested in a Taurus PT22 compact handgun? I bought it for my ex-wife for home defense... but seeing that shes not living at home, I have no use for the gun. Wanna upgrade it to a Ruger 22/45, for all day plinking fun. VERY easy gun to use for women because you don't have to cycle the slide to load a shell into the barrel. Its the silver model, and I put brand new Pearce rubber grips on it. Good back up conceal carry gun. Don't think I would advocate carrying it as a front line carry gun though. I bought it for over $200, pulled it all apart, cleaned it, added grips, and have put maybe 100 rounds through it. Only asking $150ish. Sweet little pop gun, just would rather have something else.

Well, I pulled the trigger (pun intended) on a replacement for the Taurus PT22 that I had. On a whim, I took the PT over to a local gun shop that had a Ruger 22/45 there that I had been wanting. I asked what he would give me for trade for it towards another gun. He made me a very generous offer on it, and couple that with the price I talked him down on the (very lightly) used Ruger. I walked out with a sweet target/plinking gun. I have since added a nice little BSA red dot scope. Cabela's has a sale on a particular red dot scope. Regularly $49.99, new price a whopping $14.99. Haha. Boy its gonna be all kinds of fun!

Heres some pics. Last one shows the best image I could get of the red dot.

Get yer finger off the trigger boy!

and I have that same sight. it is "ok". I got mine at Cabelas for $20

Hahaha. I know! I looked at those pics after I posted them, and said: "What the heck are you doing with your finger on the trigger?"

Yah, I'm sure its not top of the line... but I couldn't pass up adding the scope for $14.99. Should make things more interesting. I figured if I dont like it, I didn't spend much. I could always toss it on my 22 riffle too.

Went to manchester firinig line on Saturday. The new range is great. A new and improved bullet trap was installed on the range that can take rifle calibers. So no more buying frangible rounds from them at huge cost!

anywho, if you are a shooter it is a good visit especially in the winter months.

Wicked nice plinker Nate. I love those full size autos.

pedro I'll be heading there sometime this winter. Or, here http://www.belmontfirearms.com/

FYI, Maine Military Supply in Brewer has planned to build an indoor range somewhere near their store within the next 24 months. They have a generous selection of surplus ammo if you need 7.62x39, 7.62x54R, 5.56, 9mm, tokerev, they have creates of the stuff. They don't have much of a selection of used but a pretty good selection of new. Its worth a visit. https://www.mainemilitary.com/default.asp
