The unofficial GUN talk thread

Nice! Thanks for the info. And I would have the PRO right now if it wasn't for the fact that they won't sell to anyone that's not a cop or military. I want one bad.

I have no intention on shooting a deer at over 200 yards. I just don't hunt in areas that would require that kind of shot. Its seeming like 6.8 out of an 18" barrel might work nicely..

And are you in the fire service at all?

Be forewarned, we have a hard time finding ammo without going to cabelas and hoping they have the load we want. If you get one, stock up

I'm not too worried about stocking up on that ammo. That's what the 5.56 upper is for. The 6.8 will be for hunting only really.

I decided to go for .50 beowulf because of the AR-Stoner bolt barrel sale on midwayusa. The ejection port needs to be opened up either by hand with a dremel or with a mill and the standard dust cover wont latch. Someone does make oversized dust covers though. I am planning just using one of those DPMS sportical uppers with no forward assist and no dust cover and dremeling it out. It should be the easiest to modify and its nothing special if I ruin it. I figure 3-400gr bullets at ~18-2000fps will make a pretty good brush gun. I am going to pick up reloading dies for it and a single stage press which will mitigate the limited ammo availability. Go big or go home is usually my motto, but really I enjoy caliber diversity and was seconds from picking the 6.5 over the .50.

Hmmmm. Now you have me thinking. Don't know if I will end up building one from scratch or just buying a .50 complete upper. I do have the ability to mill out the ejection port if I decided to build one myself. Having a machine shop at my disposal has its perks, and I know someone that can duracoat it after milling. I think I would be hard pressed to build one for the price I could buy one anyway.

Any benefit on going 18" over 16" on .50 beowulf? Might be a prefect specimen for another custom made muzzle break... made my me!

I have no idea if there is any benefit other than more weight at the muzzle end. You are lucky if you have cool kid toys at your disposal. I just redneck the hell out of stuff and hope for the best. I build my stuff because a hundred bucks here and there is a lot easier to sell to my wife than 500. If you make two brakes I will put the second to good use haha.

Haha. Well I think we should get together and talk AR's some day.. Maybe a couple .50 brakes might come of it.

Good day at the range, new steel target I build was awesome, till my dad shot the chain holding the steel. Eff it, I'm ready for moose now

Got the AFG mounted on the AR, and got a new case for it and the shotgun. The shotgun was just sitting in the corner being attacked by the 75% humidity my house tends to be at, and the AR was hanging out in the cardboard box it came in. Figured they would like something nice to sleep in...

get a silicone gun sock and toss a bunch of the silica gel packs from the servers in that case. Talk with my dad, he has a ton of them stashed away.

I probably threw them all away during one of my cleaning binges, unless he really has them hidden.

He was saving them just for the purpose of putting them in the safes. but you may have. I'd check with him though.

They might still be around somewhere then.

The cases actually do a pretty good job at keeping out moisture. The M1 and the Enfield are at the most risk from rust since they're just bare metal, and they don't seem to pick up any surface rust being in the old plastic case. I did go over them with a barricade cloth just to be on the safe side though.
