The unofficial GUN talk thread

Remind to not piss-off my wife too much! She went to a First Shots seminar earlier in the summer and learned how to shoot. She has never really had any interest in guns, but decided to learn. She decided to know something about the ones I have. So we went out today, I showed her about my Smith&Wesson M&P 15/22. She picked it up for the first time ever (second day ever shooting) and at 25yds..............

Her VERY first shot was right on the 10.

This is mine with my S&W SD9. 15yds.

She did shoot the 9mm. She did OK at 5yds. She seemed interested in trying again. She didn't get too frustrated, and realizes practice will make her more comfortable and confident.

I also have an older AMT .380. It is small and I thought she would be more comfortable with that. I hadn't shot it in awhile, myself. She tried it about ten rounds, with not much luck. I shot it, then the 9mm, and I think the 9mm is much nicer shooting. That's when I had her try the SD. At the First Shots seminar, they were using .22s, so the larger calibers were a little intimidating.

For her second time ever shooting, she did well. And seemed to kinda like it. She liked the M&P quite a bit.

Mini-14 (.223)

Mini-30 (AK47 ammo)

Ruger PC9 (9mm)

Bennelli CX4 (9mm)

Ruger 10/22 (22LR)

Keltec 9mm

Hi-point 9mm carbine

Uzi (9mm)

M&P22 (AR that shoots .22)

M1 Carbine .30cal replicas start at $300+ for earlier Iver Johnsons and Universals. Current replicas are $800 plus. US surplus is $900+. Ammo is pricey.

Also, there are ARs out there starting at $600 new. This pretty much kills my need/desire for a Mini. ARs just fit me better, plus theres TONS for crap you can do to an AR (see Nate's)

I've tried a Mini-14, loved it.

I've tried the Keltec, didn't like it too much, awkward cheek position, less than confident bolt lock up.

I've tried the Hi-point carbine, loved it albeit heavier than you'd think it should be.

Uzi is not my thing.

Anything AR, even the AR 22s are very close to being ergonomically perfect.

Ok, so I've kinda been looking for the same thing. I've decided on the Hi-Point or Ruger PC9 or Benelli. The Hi-point is cheap (under 300 for a package deal), yet the Ruger will never lose its value. Benelli is stupid money. F-that! I also have the Ruger p-series pistol mags which also fit the PC9 carbine. The problem is the PC9 is usually around $500-$600, making the Hi-Point very attractive. There are stocks available for the Hi-point that make it look like the Benelli. 9mm is cheap, 9mm guns are not unless you get the Keltec or Hi-point.

I love my M&P 15/22. AR platform. A TON of aftermarket. Affordable ammo. Sniper rifle....NO, Plinking and 25-50yd varmint hunting...YEAH!

Did a bit of trap shooting at the range this weekend with one of my friends. our two shotguns combined cost less than 1/2 as much as any of the others there save one guy who had an old Browning A5. Hell, I did not get a good look at that and it might have been a rare or high end version A-5 so who knows. I had my 870 with extra full choke and my friend just had his H&R/ NEF single 16 ga. I still managed to break over 20 my 2nd go. Most the other guys there get 24 or 25's...

They also had a 3 gun comp going on later that day, but I had work to do at home so I did not get to check it out.

I love how it carries, I just wish it was striker fired. The long dao takes a while to get used to, and I found if I don't practice regularly I can't hit much when I do shoot

Auburn or Augusta? You should do some 3 gun.

Auburn. Androscogin fish&game.

I don't have an AR. Though I did see one guy with a sks...

I am not into platforms I would not hunt with. So .223 is not tops on my list.

If I want to spray tons of lead I can go rimfire and still shoot squirrels with it. I guess I could go build an AR squirrel gun and really make people wonder about me...

They sell ar's in .22 I think. Or atleast uppers. I watched a tv show where a guy was hunting squirrels with a 22ar. He swore by it. Personally I also have no use for .223. Not cheap enough to be fun and not powerful enough to be sure of a killshot when hunting large game. I go from 22 mag to .243 to .270 and 30-06. Each has a purpose and designated game animal
