The unofficial GUN talk thread

you will kick yourself for selling either of them.... the black rifles are a dime a doz. neither of those are. especially the garand. But if you don't like/want/use it...

yeah I guess you guys are right. it just stinks that .30 carbine rounds are so darn exspensive, and I really dont want to run that russian steel cased ammo through it. I just want something that's cheaper to shoot and a little more modern. let the saving being!

WASR is better than what they used to be. Also consider a VZ (Czech) or Polish. You can build a nice AR for 650, which is what you can get for an authentic ww2 M1 Carbine. And when I say build I mean the easy way. Complete upper for $450 with bolt, carrier, hand guards, barrel, everything. And then get the lower complete for 200-250 depending which stock you like. Plus, Smith & Wesson has a very nice "Sport" model. $650 at Cabelas right now. Only thing different about it is it has no forward assist handle. Everything else about it is total AR15. .223 can be had for $5/box for steel case. that's the cheapest I've seen it. $6 or $7 for brass/box. Plus theres a multitude of different loads you can buy depending on what you want to shoot.

Help me decide between buying an AR10 (.308), and building a new AR15 lower, and topping it off with a 7.62x39 upper.... I keep going back and forth.

I would rather another ar15. You can do stuff like 6.8spc with that. Or your silly Russian round. If I was going to get a 308 I would probably want it to be a bolt action.

I'm basically looking to build a light weight AR based hunting rifle, and long range plinker. 30 cal is a must. I'm looking to keep it short I don't need a barrel longer then 16", in fact I might build one with a 14.5". I only care for this rifle to be accurate out to 250 yard tops (where in these Maine woods will you shoot further then that anyway). And honestly I'm sure it will be accurate much further anyway.

I know it doesn't get much better then .308 for a round. But I have a feeling it's getting wasted where I'm only looking for a 250 yard gun. Keeping it in an AR15 frame I can keep it lighter then an AR10 frame.

7.62x39 ammo is dime a dozen. And there are some decent hunting ammos in that size.

The biggest thing that keeps me on the fence... Price. With one AR15 already in the gun safe, I can swap a new upper back and forth on my current lower till I build a second one. Also having priced back and forth, and all things AR10 are close to twice as much.
