The Official MS Bike Talk Thread - motors need not apply

Naah, isn't it just a 30 mile loop? 24hr racing is a hoot with a 4 or 5 person team. i haven't done one for quite some time but I did 24hrs of Canaan twice till they moved it to Snowshoe and did 24hrs of Snowshoe twice. Also did the 7 Springs 24hr Champion Challenge twice... it's a blast... racing at 2am...

Both the Bradbury Enduro (30+ mile loop, July) and the 12 hour race (September) are on for this year.

Having done both, I think the 12 hour is WAY more fun. It's on all the good trail at BBury. I think the enduro has some pretty crappy sections. In the past they've even raked out sections days before to make sure they hit the 30 mile mark

For an EFTA race, it's pretty sucktacular

Both the 24 hour and 30 mile loop are nuts. Not for me. My Bro did the 30 mile loop last year, think he did alright.

If I don't have a kiddie birthday party to do on that day i may do the 30 miler but in the "non-timed" class. hahaa! But I'd really like to do the 12hr. I miss racing... it's what kept me in shape... racing every weekend.

Is this a team event or just one rider? How big are the teams?
You can do it solo, in a pair, or a 4 person team. If it's your first 12hour, I'd recommend a 4 person team.

If you're interested, we can probably find you a team closer to the event.
Well i've got myself and two friends that would probably be interested...i've just got to find a 4th now. Maybe my buddy down in CT with the litespeed...we all have XC-All-Mtn full suspension sort of setups on our bikes...is there some sort of class for us? 4 hours on my hardtail is not my thing anymore :-P

IIRC the four person category is pretty open. It looks like this year, Packles is doing teams of 1,2,3,4 or 5+, divided into open, coed, and singlespeed. So you would probably be in Open Mens 4 Person.

Looks like he capped it at 225 riders too. I'd make sure you get your team together and registered by the end of June.

The event is pretty relaxed, so you can ride as much or as little as you want. Last year there was a band and a BBQ pit going. :occasion14:

At the first 24hrs of Canaan I did, as you rode by the campground area you got to suck in lots of good smoke. Hehehehe! These races are very laid back for the majority of riders. I also remember some lady at teh campground was making pancakes for riders in the morning. It was a hoot. Riders were pulling off, having some coffee & pancakes...

So you dont have to ride the whole time? Does one member of the team go out and the other four sit, and then you swap?

Yes. It's a relay.

I'm getting a team together... probably going to do either the 3 or 4 person class depending upon who mans-up and joins the team.

That's right- only one team member on the course at a time. Team members hand off a baton at the transition point. You can ride as many laps as you want...

Just make sure you hand off your baton to the timekeeper before you head out on another lap... seen it happen... one lap for the price of two. EEch!

Rode with Jim Sat at Bradbury for a bit. He's got the skills to pay the bills. :headbang:

The trails up there are primo right now. Dry, with just enough moisture to let you carve them up. There should be a new word for how awesome they are.

Heading back there tomorrow late am.

Yeah - here's what really happened. Fatty here went out with ShagginWagon and four other racers. One woman with us is an "expert pro" racer. Pro.

I threw up trying to keep up with the damn gazelles.

Trails are indeed fantastic, however. If you go in the next couple of days, look for the two egg and cheese sandwiches I left there. Blech.

Yeah, that pace was a little brisker than I expected. You hung in for all of the tough climbing (out of Knights and up Fox), and all of the nasty technical stuff in knights. I think once your lungs catch up with your technical skills (better than some on that ride), you'll be out front.

Sorry to hear that you lost your breakfast. :puke:

Thanks - I even rode down over that big rock face thing, and one of the aformentioned gazelles didn't do it. :headbang:

So - I'm thinking the next purchase will be shoes and pedals. Those seven-dollar toe baskets aren't doing anything more than scaring the shiat out of me. Advice?

I know you weren't asking me, James, but here are a couple things to think about for pedals. I personally started out with Wellgo pedals that have the clips on one side, only, That way you can unclip for the more technical sections. I have finally settled on CrankBrothers 5050X. A studded platform, but I get very little foot slip, and I like the freedom to bail.

With clipless pedals, I would invariably be climbing something semi-technical and maybe stall with pressure on the pedals, and couldn't unclip. I would fall over and several times thinking I was going to bash my shoulder or something on a rock.

I have had mine, and my wife's 5050s loossen slightly after the first couple of uses. I just took 'em apart and tightened the spindle cone slightly, and put some blue Loc-tite on the cone. They were good after that. I also went to HomeDepot and got additional, longer screws for the "studs". I put red Loc-tite on all the studs.

My two cents. :-)

It looks like a lot of folks here (including me) use Time ATACs. They have more of a platform than the Crank Bros, and resist clogging pretty well. There is also nothing to adjust, which makes them simple.

I think the Wellgo pedal suggestion is a pretty good one. They are cheap, and pretty basic. Not bad for starter pedals.

I think on shoes I would get something reasonably inexpensive as well. Lakes, Diadoras, Shimanos- something like that. You'll develop likes and dislikes that will probably have you buying $200 Italian shoes before you know it...

WR: we can haz Shoe/Pedal combo bundles? My ATACs need replacing..
