The Official MS Bike Talk Thread - motors need not apply

JCO- I used to wear Shimano clipless pedals. Not sure of the make, but did not care for them. I just purchased Time ATAC, Alum. for about 60 bucks. I tried them out last year on a few rides, and loved how much easier they are to get in and out of.

If you want to try to shimano's they are sitting in my basement. My preferance is the ATACs.. Good luck.

Here is a good site to look for things..

Hmm *strokes chin*...Sis just got a job at EMS corporate. May have to pop for something.

Thanks for the advice, all. Checking out Time ATACs now

I use shimano SPD because it's what i started on and i dont see any reason to change.

You can loosen the tension on them so they're easier to get out of for n00bs. I use them everywhere i ride. You'll quickly learn to unclip like 2nd nature after tipping over a few times and bashing into things. No better teacher than pain!

WR: we can haz Shoe/Pedal combo bundles? My ATACs need replacing..

Being a small shop, my shoe choices are very limited. I can get a couple of 661 models from one of my parts suppliers. Filter(freeride/bmx style, spd compatible) and ExpertMTB(entry level, two strap race shoe).

The ExpertMTB might be a good choice. Shimanos tend to be a bit less clunky than PIs, IIRC. I haven't owned either, but I don't see many PI shoes out on the trail. Shimanos more so...

I'm not sure I'd use Eggbeaters as your first pedals. Our guys have had mixed luck with them from a durability standpoint. Plus they're pretty small. Something with a platform (I think crank bros makes one called the Candy) might make you more comfortable.

No bad choices here.

Good advice, I'm sure. Candys (candies? never sure how to pluralize a singular trademark) seem a bit, well, beefier. Looking in that direction now, thanks

I'm thinking the stainless will be okay - I'm not crazy concerned about the weight of the components yet, and I think it'd be a bit more durable than some of the exotic but light compounds.

CrankBros Mallet also makes a pretty good platform/clipless pedal. A little heavy, but I don't feel that is an issue with 80% of riders.

So - just ordered a set of the Candy in black, and those PI shoes above. Crazy deal, and I think sis is actually going to pay for 'em for me as a late birthday present, too!

Anyway, can't wait to see what all the fuss is about

You're going to have a blast. Just set your expectation: at some point you will come to a complete stop and forget how to unclip. You'll flail around for a few seconds before ending up ass over teakettle in the bushes. Fellow riders will be endlessly amused.

But they rule, nonetheless.

:laughing4: We all have done it. Last year, I had a screw loose on my cleats, so when i turned my foot to clip out, so did the cleat, keeping the cleat nice and snug in the pedal. Resulted in a lot of falls, and a lot of scratches. Ended up in a ditch in the river trail. My buddy couldn't stop laughing... Not fun on my part.

Also, riding my road bike around portland, came to a stop sign, attempted to clip out, and failed. On my side I went in the middle of the road. Boy, I felt like a dumbass...

Well, hey - at least it'll give me something to talk about during smoke breaks mid-ride.

BTW, ShagWag - that guy's look was priceless when I mentioned that "maybe putting Jack Daniels in my Camelbak wasn't a great idea after all..." Blank stare for a second - was awesome. Brent or something? Yeah.

Yeah, he was pretty clueless. Strong as a horse and just about as smart. I think later in the ride he was wishing he'd tried it. :drunken_smilie:

Please let me know when you go for your first ride on them!! I want to be there!

Never. My first five or so miles of trail work will be solo - don't want any unnecessary witnesses

Doing a "fatman loop" of Bradbury 6/1 at 9AM. I'll still be sporting the toe baskets, but should be a fun one nontheless.

I'm planning on my first trip to bradbury tomorrow. I'll 2nd your solo idea too, since i haven't ridden since mid winter (the studs are still on my bike!) i'll be pretty slow and dont want any witnesses.

I need my bikes to become a permanent fixture on my car for a while.
