The Official MS Bike Talk Thread - motors need not apply

Mon. Sept 1, Labor Day, is the annual Saddleback Challenge mountain bike race here in Rangeley. This is a EFTA sanctioned points race. I believe the entry fee is about $30 which includes the one day EFTA license(necessary). In the past the organizers have provided a free burgers/dogs cookout for entrants. I'll check to see if that is happening again.

Any of you fat, flatlander, city-boys

;) wanna come up and give 'er?? I have a vacant, unfurnished apt. that I would be willing to let you crash at if you wanted to come for a night or two. There is a stove and refrigerator so you could cook and keep cold beer :occasion14:. Carpeted bedroom. Bring air mattress and folding chairs and it's dry and warm camping.

I don't think there is a team entry, per say, but how about an STM team?? Three divisions (expert, sport, novice) with age categories in each division.

PM me if you're interested. We can work out the details of letting you in the apt., etc.

Holy hell, this would be cool! Short notice, but still...

Anyone else tempted? Think about it: coooooolllllllllllddddd beeeeeeeeeeeer!

See, what he doesn't tell you is that you'll vomit all that beer up while humping up the "hills" in Rangely. Temping despite/because of that, tho....

Super nice offer, Wanna. Thanks!

Lot behind Deering - is that the one by the ballfield? 'Cause unless I hear differently, that's where Brian and I will be.

This course actually isn't all that hilly. I've never been on the mountain side at Bradbury, but I don't think it's anything like that.

Rangeley Lakes Trail Center - Rangeley, ME

A true backcountry race will challenge all riders. A great mix of fast track gravel road, wide woods trails, and challenging single-track with narrow bridge crossings. The whole course works with 200 feet of vertical, so hills are short. Come to the Trails Center where moose sign is plentiful and sightings are common

I like a moose sighting as much as the next guy. I'd consider this if we could get a group together. Andrew? MB? WannaRex?

Owning a bike shop in a resort town on a holiday weekend commits me to have my shop open that day. Can't race. Which is just as well. Even though I own a shop it seems I never find time to ride. :crybaby2:

Offer stands for use of the apt. which BTW just so you know is a 1 bedroom apt. Maybe a little mini-meet, take a drive or social bike ride.

I noticed Shaggin's post of SUNDAY Sept 1. If EFTA printed that it is a typo. Race is MONDAY

Hmmm... Racing...

I'd love to do it but I suspect that Momma will have plans for that weekend. How far is Rangely from Portland?

Plan on 2 1/2-3hrs each way. I have done it from here to Augusta, down 295 to where it meets back into 95 in 2 1/2. Labor day weekend I'd plan on 3.

Spend Sat and most of Sun w/ Mom & child, leave around 5-6 Sun eve., bring an air mattress and sleeping bag and spend the night in my vacant apt., race Mon and head home??????????????????????????

Bradbury UPDATE!

August 22, 2008 --

East side trails will reopen on Saturday, 8/23! Thank you to those of you who waited for the trails to dry! This helped to speed the process of getting the trails back into riding condition. We hope to have the west side trails open shortly after the surface water drains off the mountain side. Please exercise patience as we wait for this extended dry stretch of weather to allow us to open all the trails again. The thin soils are saturated and cannot drain the water puddled on the surface. Even limited use of closed trails will cause further damage to your trails. Please pass the word. Also, please note that the only authorized access to the trails is through the main gate at Bradbury Mountain State Park. Parking along Route #9 or in the church parking lot to avoid paying the entrance fee is considered a theft of services.

I'm going up tomorrow at 0800+however long it takes to play 18 holes of golf

Try to save some trails for me!

Was someone staffing the gate a bradbury at 8am? The park doesn't officially open until 9a.

Due to time constraints on Saturday I ended up going for a road ride... started at 6:30a and ended up doing 54 miles. I bonked.

Haha - we were going to tee off at 8, ended up teeing off by 10.

Got to Bbury at 3:00, got .2 miles (literally - thanks, GPS) into the park when my buddy's pedal FELL OFF. Game over.

GPS testing, episode 2: Wednesday at noon on the trails behind the Gorham campus. I'll keep y'all posted.

Hey Jimbo: Slightly off topic, but I recently got a new GPS also. Do you know where there is a website to go to, to upload and download tracks/routes?

singletracks.com has some ul/dl options, but I haven't paid for a membership, so I don't know what the full capabilities are. MTBR will let you upload .gpx files as well, although you do have to be logged in (registration is free.)

I've been playing with importing the info to Google Earth. Yes, you have to pay $20/year to enable the "plus" features, which include the ability to import Garmin and Magellan GPS data straight from the device. It produces a neato track overlay right on the map, and you can "fly" through your ride.
