The Official MS Bike Talk Thread - motors need not apply

I'm out - got a Board of Trustees' retreat to deal with

If there's no group interest in going to Bradbury this evening then i'll probably just jump onto the Rage ride tonite @ 5:30 meeting at the Spurwink Medical Building.

singletracks.com has some ul/dl options, but I haven't paid for a membership, so I don't know what the full capabilities are. MTBR will let you upload .gpx files as well, although you do have to be logged in (registration is free.)

I've been playing with importing the info to Google Earth. Yes, you have to pay $20/year to enable the "plus" features, which include the ability to import Garmin and Magellan GPS data straight from the device. It produces a neato track overlay right on the map, and you can "fly" through your ride.
Hey Jim! Any chance you'd let me borrow the swanky new GPS to map the Parsonsfield trails some weekend? They are unmarked but fairly sweet.

I would, but would also be interested in riding 'em with you...if schedule permits. If it don't, then you can use it.

Hokay - just got off the pig, loaded the GPS route, and BLAM-O. One freshly-minted .kmz (Google Earth) file ready for the viewing. Anyone who wants to see what this thing can do, PM me your email address - or email me directly at james.c.obrien AT gmail DOT com

SLASH goatse.

Where are these trails. Not like I can ride anytime soon, but for future reference.
Well, they are cryptically hidden by Backcountry Excursions. Hence the need for GPS'n
Yeah, so instead of charging like, $10 and give you a map, they charge like $50 and make you go with a "guide".

I've wanted to check that place out, but not for that price. :thebirdman:

Ride tonight? I'd love to - but can't. Gotta finish my dicked-up gutter install, or I'll be divorced by the weekend.

Parsonsfield trails? Those are the trails that Friends of Bradbury/Portland Trails/whoever want to link with Bradbury? Backcountry doesn't own the property, right? I'm just wondering if we'd piss anyone off by riding there.

I think you have two confused. The Pownell trails that link Bradbury to Pineland are still being negotiated, and should be off limits

The Parsonsfield trails are on parkland, and are cut and maintained by Backcountry. I don't know if it can be "illegal" (theft of services?) to ride out there, but it may cheese Cliff Krolick, the owner, off. That said, he currently charges $35 for a day's riding, which is prohibitive to most. And that cheeses me off.

I was confused - thanks for straightening me out. So, define this "parkland" that you speak of. And Cliffie - he's the owner of the company, or the land, or both?

Well, I just looked at the area, and now I am less clear:

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&client=firefox-a&q=42+Woodward+Rd+Parsonsfield,+ME+04047&ie=UTF8&ll=43.727321,-70.909882&spn=0.046642,0.119305&z=13

It doesn't appear to be State Parkland (what I thought), but it sure as heck can't belong to Cliff. He is the tour operator, and trail maintenance chief, but I'm not clear who the land belongs to. It's a decent amount of real estate.

I just tried to call the town office, with the number found here: http://maine.gov/local/york/parsonsfield/.

Sounded like someone answering in his kitchen, and was pissed about me calling. I asked about who owned a parcel of land, and he said "all our systems are shut down." I asked him what the hours were so I wouldn't bother him next time, got 8-4:00 out of him.

I'll call on Tuesday during business hours and find out who the owner is

Oh, and SW - if you want to borrow the GPS this weekend, let me know. I don't think I'll be doing much riding.

Riding Bradbury tomorrow - starting at 5:30PM. Anyone who wants to come is welcome. I want to ride the race course, so should have time for a lap.
