The Official MS Bike Talk Thread - motors need not apply

Nice mapping!
I'm riding SoPo/Cape tonite around 5:30. Wish you had the mapping done for that route. I don't know how to get over to Robinson Woods when starting at the Spurwink Medical Center. I can probably figure it out but i've only done it on night rides.
Take 77 to canterberry way on left

Go right and follow the dirt road to the tennis courts

Bear straightish between the court and the shack to the trailhead

on the trail, go right at the first intersection, and left at the second

Come out on wedgewood road

Go right at the intersection, then left onto stonegate

Follow ~.5m to trailhead on left

Follow trail to Dyer pond road and go right

Robinson trailhead at the end of the road.

^^^ Beware of tennis courts, a guy blocked the dirt road but I went right around him and hauled ass into the woods.. I did not come back that way.

Ted, how is that Presumscot loop. Difficult, long, etc? Never done it.

When did the tennis court incident happen? I remember there was some issue with it last year but I thought that was resolved.

The Presumpscot loop is pretty sweet. You should definitely give it a whirl.

A: Ducati's are sexy

B: can't afford one

C: i'm pretty sure these guys only talk about pedal bikes (but both are awesome in my book)

Lol. My dad has 2 of them. He just bought the Monster 1100S, and He calls his other one the yellow vibrator. Lol. I'm not sure what year his yellow one is, but it's mint.

Hey Andrew-

It's not that long or tough. About 12 miles/1.5 hours- about the same as Cape/SoPo. There are some technical side loops up by the river, but most of it is pretty mellow. I don't think you'll have any trouble.

The trail by the court has moved slightly, and the crazy guy has gone away. I would say it's safe for now.

rode the old StumpJumper in to work this mornin from Toyo dlrship after dropping my dad's truck off for service.

effin froze, of course it was a headwind all the way.

The tennis court was last summer, or maybe 2 summers ago.

I plan to try that Presumscot loop, wish this weekend was nice cause I have copmany that will take care of the little on while I ride. Dammit

Any of you boys like ducati's??
I do. Riden a Monster (600 soemthing) and ST2 which was awesome. Brother had the monster then upgraded to ST2. Now he rocks road, mountain, cyclocross, and what ever bikes. Wife made him get rid of it when he had kids.

That is now my road bike, tried to get the Ducati but he would not give it to me.

My bro in-law used to work for a company in Italy that made the carbon fiber fairings for Ducati. I think they were for the 996 or 999.

Rode SoPo/Cape this morning... left the house at 5am (headlamp on). I skipped the tennis court entry because I didn't want to try to figure it out in the dark so I just picked up the GreenBelt in the neighborhood off Mitchell Rd. Also skipped the trail behind the High School and just went down Scott Dyer Rd to Spurwink to pick up the trails over that way. I hear that you can pick up those trails off of Wells Rd somewhere since the Deer Run Rd access has been nipped by new construction.

Trails are in great shape... wish my legs & lungs were too...

Yah- looks nasty, but I might be up for a ride at the river. Drop me a email if you want to go.

SoPo/Cape tonight at 530p from Spurwink Medical Center.

Ever get out to the Camden Snow/Mud Bowl? Nice riding out there.

I'm gonna go up to my dads soon. I'll have to take some pictures and post them.

Rode this route last night, and some Dbag had closed the gates at Canterberry way. It doesn't look like an organized effort, but use your discretion in there for a few weeks.

Doing my pre-season maintenance on the bike and the equipment this weekend. My class this semester is online, so I can ride pretty much whenever. Kid's due in September, so I need to get some serious miles in while I can.

Plan for a post-work ride next week? I'm thinking Tuesday or Wednesday in/near Portland.

i've done close to 30 miles since i got my bike out and i have a stupid question. my fork says it's for "leisure cross country" and not to use for downhill or agressive riding. and most of what i do is probably considered agressive. i haven't bottomed out the suspension yet, and the bike is still close to brand new. should I worry about it/upgrade?

What do you have up front? Downhill riding means launching off 10' drops...aggressive riding is a pretty subjective term and probably means a little something different to everyone. I would say that if you're on a trail that folks can walk on easily, the suspension on the front of your rig should be fine. If your trail gets rocky and is littered with roots that don't give too much...and your haulin', that might be considered aggressive based on your component group and bike as a whole. Lastly, when the trail is rocky and "rooty" and technical (twisty to the point where you'll be under compression at awkward angles) that's where a quality fork might be something on your wish-list.

Like I said, its all pretty subjective. I've been involved with bikes for quite a while and learned that a rider can be held back with sub-par equipment when they buy from the big-box stores. A rig bought from a knowledgeable sales person based on your skill level and what you might be doing in the future offers confidence in the bike's ability to keep ahead of a rider's needs. The cool thing about it all is that bikes are pretty inexpensive to upgrade compared to our cars! Top level components (XTR and whatever SRAM has these days and Rockshox SID) that are race ready, will work smoother and faster than you would expect and last forever and are within reach of amature riders. The mid-level gear (Deore or RockShox Reba for example) are usually heavier siblings of their race-ready superiors and offer nearly the same performance and durability.

^What he said.

The worst thing that's likely to happen is that you bend the fork stanchions. If that happens, you'll need a new fork anyway, so...Ride it like you stole it!

Around here, we tend to have a lot of roots and smaller granite features, so a good fork can definitely help you feel more confident and reduce fatigue. Like Mike said, post what you got!
