The Official MS Bike Talk Thread - motors need not apply

The second one looks nicer!

Shimano 105 is good stuff. For the crankset, look for a double ringer unless you plan on riding the Kanc or other mountainous roads. For around the coast a double is best. You can go cheap on a front derailleur but don't go cheap on teh rear. It's where most action happens. Shim 105 will work well there. SHifters (mainly the rear) is another area to not cheap out. Go 105 if possible. Knesis carbon fork is good too. >

I have all tiagra components on my road bike, and it works great, shifts fine, nothings broken yet. I bought an entry level because i really wasn't sure how much i'd use it, I still much prefer MTB, but it hurts my knee more, so the road bike gets use when that's acting up. My g/f's road bike had all 105 components and the only thing i really felt much of a difference with was the rear derailleur. Just steer FAR away from their sora crap or whatever it's called. The really base bikes i tried out had that on them and they were really bad. Keep your eyes peeled for used bikes, I bought mine on ebay and it only had like 150 miles on it.

Well I stopped at a LBS tonight... and happened to bump into one of these:

I rode it on the trainer for a while and took it for a spin out in the nice 16* weather.

Avoid teh Sora stuff X100000000. It's cheap. That Felt bike is pretty sweet. That's what I was looking at too.... Felt & Giant. The Felt felt a little big or small (can't remember) so that's why I got the Giant. I see a lot of people riding them and for the $$, you're getting a lot of bike. Definately a better value than the Giant.

+1 Nice looking ride!

Haha that's like the same thing I looked at new when i bought my bike! I was scared away because I'd never heard of Felt before....it did have nice components and rode well.

Hey guys, I thought I might bring this back from the dead

We had a couple nice days and it got me in the mood to ride. But I currently don't have a "big" bike. I only have a BMX right now. But I might be moving out to Utah this summer, and a "big" bike is mandatory. I spent last summer in Utah and I barrowed and rented bikes... So I was wondering if anyone knows of anyone selling a decent full suspension xc bike? I rode a lot of bikes last summer and I've come to love the versatility of the full suspension. Rugged, I saw you have a Klein Mantra... I've never been on one, but something about that bike has always drawn me in. I think its because of the rear lock out and its sweet looks

So yeah. Cross country bikes for sale?

Do yourself a favor - go to www.ragemtb.com/mainiacs, register for the group, then ask that same question. We're a nutty bunch, but there are enough people rotating bikes through their arsenal that you'll probably find something worthwhile. Worst-case, they'll put you in touch with a bike shop with a used weapon that'd be a good fit.

Nice to see another rider on here (although I'm jealous that you're going out west, hehe)!

Hey thanks for that tip. I'm going to do that right now

I was just on craigs list and the online version of Uncle Henry's. I found a couple nice bikes, but nothing I'm really interested in. But definately some cheap stuff. Last week there was a '03 Rock Mountain Switch for $500 in the uncle henrys. that's a pretty good deal...

Yeah, Utah is pretty awesome. If you don't have a bike in the summer, you don't have a friend haha. Well, its not that bad... But close

A buddy of mine and I are gonna start riding some trails in/around Portland prolly next weekend or the weekend after. If you're not moving too soon, let me know. I have a 4-bike tow hitch mount on the back of the rex, and we'd love comp'ny.

Bradbury, Rage's "urban assault" (check out the 'rides' section on that website), or some trails near my place in Westbrook are where we do most of our falling riding.

My bikes is teh fastar than yours. ;D

I'm up for some rides in/around Portland. I just need some lead time to let momma know.

So I tried to sign up. Do I just send an email to that address on the contact page? I got really confused and my dialup was sucking bad. so I gave up. I think I was expecting a forum-like format, but this is more of just mass emails?

Man... today is gonna be a great day to ride... a lil muddy but still. I think I might die if i go out and ride today. I need some time on the indoor trainer to loosen the cobwebs.

Work 'em out! The back-yard-o-meter says trails will be wet and squishy with spots of snow today. I'll probably pass on the ride.
