The Official MS Bike Talk Thread - motors need not apply

Not riding today - drinking beer instead ;D

Gonna still play with the bike, tho - bringing it up from downstairs in a few to do the last cleaning/lubing before I ride...next weekend, maybe?

So whats the deal with this "rage" thing? Still haven't signed up, partially because I'm confused by it... And I've been itching to ride!

Yeah, it's a mass email thing. Sign up by sending an email to the address in the mailto: link on the contact page.

Once you're on the list, you'll be able to read the mostly off-topic chatter, but there are some good tips to be had. Just last week I had a maintenance question, sent it out to the list, and got no less than 15 replies.

Also check out the "rides" section. Nice maps there.

Not a bad ride at all once I broke the cobwebs & loosened some of the lung butter. The roads are pretty crappy... seems like every storm drain has sunken about 3".

I'm thinking of the section between Payson Park and Baxter Woods, maybe some of the old Audubon -maintained stuff adjascent to outer Congress...

they put a lot of crushed stone on the audubon trails off Congress last year if i'm not mistaken. Are you allowed to ride those trails? They used to be a mud pit.

I've never been on the payson Park/Baxter Woods trails... i've only been on the River trail way out washington ave... and i've only done those trails at night.

Re: Audubon trails - yes, you can ride them. Once Portland Trails took over the maintenance, riding is a-ok. Don't let the signage fool you, though. The old Audubon signs are up that say no bikes.

And you really should ride 'em this summer - they're a great xc ride, with some little technical spots, climbs, and bridges to hop up onto (at speed if you dare, hehe). My favorite xc stuff in Portland.

Email pasted below that states that the trails are now OK for bikes, don't mind the ad for the Portland Trails auction this Friday. Paragraph 3 is what you're looking for.

Hi all. It's been a while! I've moved to Bath, where most of the

trails are still buried under slush and ice, although there's riding to

be had. I would love to host a ride and (post-ride grill- and drinks

session) up at my place this summer if anyone's interested. I've got

miles of great trails right out my back door, and Reid with its more

famous trails just downriver. To me, it's paradise!

I'm writing to encourage you all to come to Portland Trails' annual

Happy Trails Big Bash and Silent Auction. It's Friday, April 11,

starting at 5:30 pm at the Eastland Park Hotel. The silent auction

ends at 8:00 p.m., but the music, food, and dancing will keep rolling.

Tickets are $20 for members of Portland Trails, $25 for non-members.

You can buy them at the door or call ahead to 775-2411 -- or email me

and I can hook you up with tickets too.

For those who don't know, Portland Trails is the non-profit land trust

operating to conserve undeveloped land in and around the city, and to

create and maintain trails. Much of the trails we Ragers ride are

maintained by Portland Trails, including the Fore River area -- which

is now open to us riders. (You may remember that under Audubon

management, technically we weren't supposed to be in there... but I'm

working to make sure Trails stays bike-friendly and keeps access open

for us.)

The more the merrier, so I hope you all come to the event. It's always

a good time, and you can score some cool stuff at the silent auction.

Hope to see you there!

Todd

It's just the club name. I wouldn't construe it to mean that we're any angrier than anyone else.

I kinda have a big favor to ask. I know a few of you live in Portland and are very bike-smart. There is a Klein Mantra Carbon for sale in Portland and I was wondering if anyone that lives in the congress st. area would be willing to check it out for me? No big deal if I can't find a volunteer. Just didn't want to travel all that way for something not worth it. I mean, it's a Klein so it probably is

But size wise and all...

I'll take a look, even see if I can take it to a shop for you for a quick "inspect before you buy". I'll need to know how tall you are (and what length pants fit you best).

What kind of rider are you? May as well take this to PMs from now on.

Love my mantra, but definitely take it for a spin! They're very unique bikes and those that love them really love them and the rest dont get it.

Yah- used carbon is teh sketchy. Head up to Bath Cycle. They have lots of non-crappy used stuff.

Almost ready for riding. need to get my brakes fixed and tune up. we need to set up some group rides. Usually it is just me and my buddy. We go to SP/Cape, river trails, Bradbury(rare). Not the best or the worse riders, we like to have some fun

Guys, I'm buying a house in Yarmouth specifically for its proximity to Bradbury. That, plus my season pass to State Parks mean that I'm gonna be one cross-country ridin' mofo this summer :headbang:

STMers are welcome to rendezvous at my place and caravan up. I've got room in the car (and on the rack) for three others.
