Head on collision coming home from Evergreen tonight

Nigel, I understand fully what you are saying, but the problem is if it is claimed totaled, I will be left with 4-6k of pocket change (still owe 2-3k on the loan), and no more immaculate condition reliable Bugeye. To top that off, being a full time college student, I would NOT be able to purchase another WRX at this time. I would be left to buy something inferior and most likely crappy and unreliable.

That alone is what is killing me the most. I want it back fixed in the condition it was in. Period.

I wonder if part of the issue here is that you have such high standards of how the car needs to look and function. Sad to say the insurance industry don't see it that way. To them, "good enough for most ppl" is all they need to worry about--you had a Subaru that got totaled, here's the $$$ for another Suby of similar age, thank you, next case pleeze..

If you do decide to pursue repair, here's hoping the body shop it's at will give a dang about doing you a better than average job on fit n finish. Sure wouldn't hurt to tell em that's important to you.

Good luck, hard call either way.

i know where there is a wrb bugeye for sale

...At $6K damage, they'll total it.

Emotions aside, in Their minds it's an "old" Impreza, and the insurance companies play by their Charts, & sadly, not by your feelings.

They'll sell you the shell for a few hundred bucks, you'll have to strip it and buy another WRX.

If you had a Custom Parts Rider, your ins. co would have HAD to pay the difference, & you could have picked up a fair % of what you actually had, IN your car, instead of the depreciated, "typical used car" value.

Sheeetey lesson to learn, I'm sorry it happened to you.

What a sheety situation. You definately had a nice ride. Sorry if they do total it. Just remember you can buy it back. We all know as Subie owners that you will be back into a Subie if not the one you lost.

Every time I see this thread I think about you waiting for monday to see what they're going to do with your car. Must be horrible.

I can't imagine how you feel about this, I was really upset when the tow truck driver crashed my car and they were talking about totaling it. And my car is just a slightly beat up stock legacy L.

As of right now, it's been deemed totaled. Unbelievable. And I still haven't got the numbers yet from the insurance company... not too happy about that either.

What do you guys recommend? I'm not gonna just let this go this easily. This is the first time I've had to deal with a situation like this so I'm not quite sure what to do at this point. The adjuster never took into consideration the condition of the vehicle before the wreck, maintenance records, service records, and aftermarket parts (which I know don't add much overall value). When I mentioned this to him, he told me it wasn't his responsibility to take into account these factors. Uhmm, excuse me?

If anyone has any advice on this, please let me know. My cell # is 207-798-0531.

Until I get those numbers (ACV and repair costs), this isn't over yet.

I would say take there money, buy back the car for a couple hundred, and part it out completely. that should leave you in a good spot...

Here's the problem. The visual inspection for damage was probably at 60-70% of the value of the car. For collisions like yours, especially when it hits drivetrain components, the final bill will be higher than that. Short of getting another auto shop to get a lower estimate, it sounds like they're going to total it.

What this means for you: You'll have the option to buy it back for CHEAP. You can then have it fixed on your dollar with a big check from the insurance company. Do some thinking before you sign or agree to anything. Figure out what's best for your situation.

the sad central fact of this saga is simple--the ins company does NOT value the car the same way its owner does. to them it is just XXX year XX Brand @ xxx,xxx mileage, therefore the value is $xxxx. period.

Like it or not, they could care less about what you say car is worth. there is no statistically valid way to value the mods, so the ins co simply does NOT value them.

this is the downside of making a large investment of time, emotion, and especially $$ in modding your car. if/when it gets terminally crunched, the owner will NEVER get that full amount back, no matter how well the mods are documented.

buy back the wreck and part it out, that is your best way out of a tough spot financially. do NOT try to rebuild the wreck, there will inevitably be more repairs than initially thought, and owner does not have the time and resources to deal with that crapola.

So suck it up, deal with the cards you been dealt, and move along. this decision will save you a lot of emotional wear and tear. (not to mention it will get you out of the effing rental sooner

condolences, and I mean it.

PS--at least if you get another bugeye, much of the good stuff will transfer over no prob.

Ryan if you start looking for a new car there is a 2003 Subaru WRX in black with what looks like a fair amount of quality upgrades and parts at Marvin's Autobody in Farmington. Its condition is mint, paint is immaculate. Looks like the car was well cared for and then had a minor collision, maybe similar to your damage but not totalled. It has just over 100,000 miles on it. Front bumper, hood, fenders, fog lights, and headlights are brand new. Also looks like the subframes and A-Frames are new (not sure if that's what subaru calls those parts). I think it also said it had a new turbo, brakes, clutch and other stuff. Also has an STI type wing and I think JDM taillights. They may just be aftermarket euros though. If I hadn't bought my car, I would buy this one. The sticked says "Blue Book Value $10,200". I would bet you might be able to get it for $8000. Then you could use your old car as a parts car, since this one is basically the same car and color. Or maybe you could sell your old car as "totalled repairable" after removing the good upgrade parts.

I went to the body shop today to speak with them about the damage. The guy was surprised they totaled it. He even said the damage really isn't even that bad and could easily be repaired. He did the estimate himself. He said I'd have plenty of money from the insurance company to buy it back and fix it, and was willing to help me out as much as he could as far as extra expenses that may come up. I've dealt with this body shop for years now, and I know they aren't yanking my chain on this one.

Still no word from the insurance company.

my worry would be that they find something unexpected that costs a lot. maybe frame pulling or something. then you'd be left with a halfway finished car and no money. and it would be a salvage title worth very little.

yeah, with a salvage title, it's worth about half what kbb value is on the same unwrecked car. I'd only fix it if you intended to drive to to 200k+

As I was going to anyway. Never had any plans to sell it. Being a full time college student, I can't afford another car loan. I had only 10 months left on this loan

wow ryan sorry again to hear about your car...i know that you have a lot of stuff done to your car. when my car was wrecked the insur. company told me that they were going to total it 8700$ wrth of damage on a 11,200$ car, now i dont know if this will work for you or what not. but since it was someone else's fault i think that's why they fixed mine. i came up with a list of ALL of the aftermarket stuff on the car and a list of prices for all of them roughly 12k$ they then adjusted the value of my car just enough to fix it, im assuming it was b/c it was gonna be charged to the idiot's insur. not mine dunno if this will help you but i begged n pleaded and came up with a list, but who knows. just throwing that out there. just when mines gettin fixed yours might be goin bye bye. i was actually gonna see if u wanted to do a shoot in the next couple weeks when i get mine back. sorry again bro.
