Mini Group Drive

I think that's what its sounding like. I talked with Dan earlier. I think we might check some routes saturday or sunday. He was talking about the south shore road in rangeley. Its fairly long, its fairly wide and very well maintained. It does see a fair amount of traffic because it borders the south shore of Rangeley Lake but its a town road and its ALL DIRT. Plus it gets us around downtown Rangeley and we still get to drive past the Hight of the Land scenic overlooks on route 17 just south of Oquassac. W00t. These are only Ideas though, I didn't originally propose this drive so I guess final say is with MikeD and Adam, if not them then with the group, is that about right Mike?

a;right sounds good to me, that scenic overlook is close to where i hit my first moose:D

I have all the power!!!

Just kidding...I think that the group can decide, I just posted the OP and am keeping tabs on the roster. All this is based on some PMs Adam and I had a while ago. The folks who are working hard to find good routes based on their knowledge of the back roads of our great state have more to say about where we are going than I do. I would like to keep the times set (leave around noon and be back by 6pm). Other than that, the Rangley trip looks to be the most sound in planning there seems to be some members who know the area well. Right now it seems this is our best bet! If this is the general agreement for those who are going, then we can make it official before we meet up.

Thanks again to those who have really put their minds to finding good roads for us to enjoy. This is going to be a lot of fun!

Great then, I think we have a general route plan... the only question is the end I think. I looked at a few options while texting Dan. Someone mentioned the Bryon road. Depending on its condition we could hit it on the way back from Rangeley going toward rumford. It would divert us toward weld, at which point we could head toward dixfield and rt 4 or rt 108 back to auburn if we have time. If we are running later than expected we can just follow 17 to rumford/mexico and jump on to rt 4 or rt 108 back to Auburn. Decisions Decisions.

Oh and BTW for one of the next times we do this we can skip Hight of the Land and 17 and take Bemis Rd, which is about 10 miles of good dirt road by the looks, just south of Mooselookmeguntic.

Excellent, I'm sold and I don't think that there is going to be much debate...your presentation is solid! Now, if you could manage directions or a map that would be great...or if you're sick of doing all the work, PM me the information and I can do the rest. Thanks agian.

so i was thinking bald mountain road witch changes 2 dirt at the end?? and goes right to sothshore. also r we stoping in rangeley for bathroom breaks and food??? cuz there rest rooms and parking at the townpark

Dan you know the roads in Rangeley better than the rest of us. I am probably going to go along with whatever you think.

Mike I will get back to you soon, I want to talk to Dan before I PM you.

Ok, Opinions wanted. We have a few options when comming back from Rangeley.

Option 1: Just follow rt 17 to Rumford/Mexico and hop on to rt.108 back to Rt.4 in turner and then back to Auburn.

Option 2: Veer off Rt. 17 at Coos Canyon, and take the weld road which is dirt and leads to Byron rd, which is also 100% dirt. This road travels through Mt. Blue state park, it can be a little rough for a sporty car but I made it this past summer and so did the mercedes I was with, any of you OBS guys will do just fine. The road travels past the foot of several impressive mountains included Tumbledown Mountain and 2 of its trail heads. The road emerges near downtown Weld. From weld we can take Dixfield rd. to Dixfield, then hop on 108 to rt 4 in turner and back to Auburn.

Option 3: Same as option 2 except from Dixfield we travel east on Rt 4 for about 2.5 miles and link up with the Canton Point Rd. It is a somewhat twisty back road to Canton. At the end of Canton Point we connect to rt.140 and travel south a couple miles in to Canton and link up with 108, to Rt. 4 in turner, then back to Auburn.

Option 4: (Extended Fun) Same as option 3 but if we have time we can travel north instead of south on 140. 140 gets a lil twisty while it borders the Androscoggin back to Jay. From Jay we immediately cross the Scrog (river) and link up with the ever popular Crash Rd. from Jay to Livermore. In livermore we connect with Rt. 4 and travel back to Auburn.

Just some Ideas, we can make the added options Time dependent if we want to.

I got work and a doctors appointment on tuesday, sorry Kristof

. I would have had work this day too but I asked to use Vacation time for it. Not bad since I get the rest of the week off too. Not bragging, just hoping there was some way you could make it a day off.

Sorry you can't make this one Kristof. The date was picked because I figured a number of folks would have it off from work and school would be out of the college/high school members. Maybe next time.

Ok, I get it. You must be watching the kids or something then I assume? Too bad, would have been nice to get a group photo at the Hieght of Land on the Rangeley Scenic By-Way with a DGM late model STI included... bummah.

You would want to drive that to check it out. I wonder if you can get all the way through.?.
